FNL July Featured Garden



Before

• Garden prior to excavation
• Lot’s of "weeds" (foxtails, wild lettuce, dandelions, horehound, & mallows)

After
• Excavated swales to collect water, vary topology, & drain upper rim
•Mulched 4”-8” deep over existing vegetation
• Basil planted nearby tomatoes is said to improve their taste
• Noticed that the bees are very much attracted to the flowering basil
• Artichoke, tomatoes, basil, oranges, and grapefruit tree

Banana Circle Patch
• Elaeagnus is a nitrogen fixer & has edible berries
• Strawberry & Borage are companion plants
• Pole beans are climbing up fruit trees
• Mint, peppers, beans, strawberry's, borage, elaeagnus bush, bananas, guavas, peach, pomegranites, blackberry, raspberry, nasturtium, sugarcane, beans

Corn Patch
• 3 sisters garden bed (corn, squash, beans)
• Also potatoes, sweet potatoes, sunchokes, sunflowers, orich, amaranth, cherimoya, & apple tree
• Fence made from Arundo donax (invasive that grows in river beds) & tied with agave leaves
• Wild lettuce left to flower to attract benefitials

•Covered with cardboard
•Topped with 6" of mulch
•Can see pallet compost bin on upper left
•Potato plant on right

• Potatoes growing in metal trashcan with holes
• Covering with mulch as it grows until it reaches top of can

  • brewing in trashcan w/ bubbler
  • used to fertilize garden
